What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, meaning “the science of life,” is a 5,000-year-old healing system from India that focuses on achieving optimal health by balancing mind, body, and spirit. This holistic approach to health emphasizes prevention through individualized care, understanding the unique constitution (dosha) of each person, and maintaining harmony with the natural world.

Ayurveda is often referred to as the “sister science” of yoga. While yoga focuses on physical postures, breathwork, and mental clarity, Ayurveda provides a framework for how to live, eat, and take care of oneself. Together, they form a powerful system for holistic well-being and are mutually supportive: yoga brings balance to the mind, while Ayurveda grounds and nourishes the body.

How Ayurveda Helps Prevent Burnout:

In Ayurveda, burnout is seen as a state of imbalance caused by prolonged stress, overstimulation, or physical and mental overexertion. Each individual has a unique constitution, or prakriti, made up of three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—which govern various physical and mental characteristics. When these doshas fall out of balance, they lead to specific symptoms, including those associated with burnout.

Burnout often manifests differently depending on one’s dosha:

  • Vata burnout may include anxiety, insomnia, scattered thoughts, and feeling overwhelmed.
  • Pitta burnout may lead to anger, frustration, high blood pressure, and an inability to “switch off.”
  • Kapha burnout may result in lethargy, depression, and feeling stuck or unmotivated.

By identifying individual doshic tendencies, Ayurveda can help address burnout’s root causes and offer tailored strategies for prevention.

Your teacher – Victoria Hyndman

In a light-spirited manner yet sticking to the authentic teachings of yoga, Victoria uses the wisdom of Ayurveda in her yoga classes for students to experience spiritual access through physical practice. Canadian-born, Amsterdam raised and moved to Los Angeles in 1997 to discover the world of yoga and Ayurveda, Victoria moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2005 to study at The Ayurvedic Institute under the guidance of her primary teacher, Dr. Vasant Lad. She also experienced her first pregnancy there during the last few months of her Ayurvedic studies with dr. Lad, who gave her golden tips on pregnancy, birthing and post-natal healing and rejuvenation, which Victoria passionately passes on to all women in her women’s workshops. Now, back in Amsterdam with her two children, Victoria teaches various classes, all that are challenging as they are nourishing, strengthening yet softening, bringing the students to a place within themselves where they have direct experience of finding both strength and softness, where all opposites become balanced.
